Standard BNQ 0419-070
Mineral amendments – Natural limestone
Natural limestone is a raw material essential to the agricultural sector. Its quality depends on several elements that are important to define and control. That is precisely the purpose of standard BNQ 0419-070, which specifies the properties of natural limestone for agricultural use, as well as the criteria and testing methods to verify those properties. It also sets out the traceability requirements in order to ensure that natural limestone is not mixed with other products. The standard applies to mineral substances composed mainly of calcium carbonate and magnesium carbonate, obtained exclusively by crushing or grinding natural calcareous rock, and destined for agricultural use to neutralize soil acidity.
The standard’s requirements deal mainly with the following elements:
- Types of natural limestone;
- Categories of natural limestone;
- Water content; neutralizing capacity;
- Efficiency;
- Calcium carbonate content;
- Transport, storage and traceability;
- Marquing.

Certification Offer
It is in the interest of natural limestone producers to have their limestone certified since certification guarantees the quality of the product for clients. BNQ’s certification program “Mineral amendments — Natural limestone” is therefore intended for producers interested in obtaining recognition of their products’ compliance. To obtain certification, producers must demonstrate to BNQ that they meet the requirements of BNQ’s certification program based on four documents, including the certification protocol BNQ 0419-900.
This certification program is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
