Prefabricated reinforced concrete structures offer certain important advantages: a very long useful life, watertightness and major structural capacity. However, these characteristics are possible only with reinforced concrete products that meet specific standards, such as BNQ 2622-420. This standard relates more specifically to prefabricated reinforced concrete sewer manholes, cesspools, valve chambers and pumping stations of circular or polygonal shape, intended for use at depths of up to 7 metres in household waste, combined sewer and storm water sewers and drinking water systems. It therefore establishes the requirements governing the size and structural features of these components. The standard’s requirements are divided into three categories :

  • General requirements (surface of components, materials, shop drawing, curing conditions, anchor, openings, etc.);
  • Specific requirements (concrete characteristics, concrete characteristics, watertightness, reinforcements, tests, etc.);
  • Dimensional requirements (component size tolerance, minimal size of culvert components, etc.).

The standard also provides manufacturers and engineer-designers with information concerning pipe designation, reinforcement, butt junctions, test methods, test reports and markings.

Certification Offer

For individuals conducting business in Québec in the reinforced concrete sector, BNQ certification is an excellent calling card. Its guides the choices of clients who would rather trust products recognized for their quality by an impartial third-party. The BNQ therefore established a certification program based on four documents, including the BNQ 2622-951 protocol, which specifies the certification requirements, procedural rules and marking requirements applicable to the certification of prefabricated reinforced concrete sewer manholes, cesspools, valve chambers and pumping stations in accordance with the requirements of standard BNQ 2622-420. The program is intended for manufacturers interested in having the BNQ recognize the conformity of their products and for clients who wish to use the certification protocol.

To have their products certified, manufacturers must apply to the BNQ and show that they comply with the requirements of the certification program.

This certification program is accredited by the Standards Council of Canada.
