ISO 45001
Occupational health and safety management systems – Requirements with guidance for use
On March 12, 2018, the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) published the first international standard on occupational and safety management systems, standard ISO 45001. The purpose of this standard is to allow organizations to manage their occupational health and safety (OHS) risks and proactively improve their performance in this area. The standard provides a framework to mitigate incidents, accidents, injuries and work-related health problems for workers and persons working under an organization’s control.
Standard ISO 45001 is based on the structure adopted for other management standards, such as standards ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, in order to allow companies to simplify the integration of a health and safety management system into a more comprehensive management system (e.g., quality, safety and the environment).
Modeled on standard OHSAS 18001, standard ISO 45001 places more emphasis, among other things, on the consultation and participation of workers and their representatives in the change management process and the consideration of risks related to the outsourcing of activities.
