Residential Swimming Pools Equipped With a Diving Board - Minimum Water Envelope to Prevent Cervical Spinal Cord Injuries Resulting From Diving From a Diving Board

Since the arrival of swimming pools equipped with a diving board in the back yards of homes in Québec, a large number of accidents have occurred that have unfortunately resulted in cervical spinal cord injuries that have left most victims quadriplegic. Some incidents led to legal disputes between pool users and pool owners, and it became obvious that a standard needed to be developed to ensure user safety and owner liability. The BNQ 9461-100 standard sets out new dimensional and geometric specifications for the minimum water envelope required to provide a safe environment for diving in a residential pool. The standard is for pool professionals and pool owners. It has already made it possible to significantly reduce the number of injuries, and it is already mandatory in some municipalities and districts.
